The main character in A Girl of the Limberlost is Elnora Comstock. She is a young girl just starting highschool. She has curly reddish-brown hair and a pale, white face. The clothes she wears changes from rags to more modern and more expensive clothes becase her neighbors care for her like their own daughter, She does wear old clothes on the first day of school because she has nothing else, but after she wears clothes like everyone else becase she has money from selling her moths and indian arrowheads. When she first goes to school she is really nervous, but she is really smart.
She lives with her mother near a swamp called the Limberlost. Her mother is very hateful and angry toward Elnora. She did not support Elnora's decision in wanting to go to school or playing the violin. The reason for Ms. Comstock's anger is because her husband, Robert, died. Her mother always complains about property tax on the land, but she refuses to cut a tree down or let people dig for oil so they can make money. The money she is spending on the property is why she won't pay for Elnora to go to school.
Throughout the story, Elnora changes for the better. She becomes more confident and independent. She is able to make good decisions and organize her time playing the violin while still making good grades and keeping her violin playing from her mother. She finally knows how it feels to be in love with somebody and how to make choices in love. Her appearence changes from a young scared girl to a confident young woman who dresses well. She graduated number one in her class and was respected and liked by all of her peers. She went from having no friends at the beginning of school to everyone liking her.
Ms. Comstock changed a lot throughout the book as well. At first, she was always angry and yelling at Elnora. She found out her husband had cheated on her and she became nicer towards Elnora. She began to accept Elnora wanting to be educated after she found out Elnora graduated at the top of her class. She also heard Elnora play the violin at a program and liked what she heard. Ms. Comstock went from a sorrow filled lady who was always yelling to a supportive mother.
